How a Breast Enlargement is Performed

Pre-Surgery Appointment

Dr. Romanelli and the North Shore Plastic Surgery team will see you again closer to the time of surgery to answer any remaining questions you may have, and to finalize your pre-operative preparation. Depending on your health history, we may have you see your primary care physician for medical clearance prior to surgery.

Your Breast Augmentation

At the time of your surgery, Dr. Romanelli and the North Shore Plastic Surgery team at our Long Island plastic surgery center will work together to provide you a safe, individualized, and supportive experience. Our caring nurses will be with you before, during, and after the procedure. A physician anesthesiologist will give you a light general anesthetic to keep you comfortable. And Dr. Romanelli will use his extensive training and years of experience to ensure that your breast augmentation surgery gives you the best possible results. The surgery generally takes 1 hour.

Depending on your personal circumstances, the incision may be made at the edge of the areola, in the crease below the breast, or in the underarm area. Great care is taken to minimize scarring, no matter which incision site is used. Dr. Romanelli will gently insert the implant either in front of or behind the chest wall muscle, as best suits your needs. If you are also having a breast lift, Dr. Romanelli may also remove excess skin and breast tissue, and reposition the nipple. Your incisions will be closed and bandaged, and the surgery will be complete.

Your health, safety and comfort are as important to Dr. Romanelli and our staff as are the beautiful results of your breast augmentation surgery. You will also enjoy the attention and care of our highly qualified team of nurses and patient care coordinators, as well as our careful monitoring of your recovery.

You may feel tired and sore for a few days after the surgery. You should plan to rest and relax for at least three to five days before returning to work or school, and wait at least a week before resuming high-impact exercise. Your breasts may be sore and sensitive for a couple of weeks, but will soon start to feel better. The scars will generally fade and become much less noticeable.
