This is a woman in her sixties who was referred to our Long Island plastic surgery practice to repair a failed breast reconstruction.  At another institution (with other surgeons) she underwent right mastectomy with a tissue expander which became infected and was removed.

At our consultation she was very afraid of any future infection, and wanted a reliable reconstruction of her breast.  The right chest showed scar tissue and retracted skin, but fortunately there was no evidence of any infection.  We recommended reconstruction using her own tissue from the lower abdomen (Tummy Tuck or TRAM flap).

Her surgery took about 4 hours to perform, and she spent only 3 nights in the hospital.  She was anxious to return home, and avoid any hospital-acquired infections.  Fortunately her recovery was excellent.  She returned to fully activities over the next 6 weeks, and is comfortable wearing her clothes again without a prosthesis.

We have offered nipple reconstruction, but for now at least she is happy with her results.  A side benefit of the Tummy Tuck flap is her flatter abdomen.
