This 53 year old woman was referred to our plastic surgery office for immediate reconstruction of her right breast after the diagnosis of breast cancer a few years ago.  At our Long Island office we discussed her options and she opted for right breast reconstruction with a TRAM (transverse rectus abdominus muscle flap), or a "Tummy Tuck Flap."  Most patients require 4-5 nights in the hospital, but she went home after 3 nights and was back at work a few weeks later.

She recovered very well, but returned about a year later with a different breast cancer in her left breast.  The tummy tuck flap had already been used, and after discussion she chose a tissue expander for the left breast, which only required a one night hospital stay.  Later, as an outpatient procedure, she had the tissue expander removed and a silicone gel implant placed.  Later on, as another outpatient procedure we reconstructed her nipples and areola.

She is seen here about 3 years since her last surgery, and her scars have faded very well.  She has been cancer free for years and is able to wear clothes comfortably, including bathing suits.
