After Reconstruction, Right Side

After Reconstruction, Right Side

Case # 66

At the time of her diagnosis of breast cancer this woman sought immediate breast reconstruction on Long Island.  She was anxious to be cured of her cancer, but also to get back to work as soon as possible.  She wanted the quickest, least traumatic breast reconstruction available.

The patient's breast cancer was on the right side.  Her breast surgeon was able to do a skin-sparing mastecomy, just removing a small ellipse of skin around the right areola.  Fortunately, we were able to immediately replace the breast volume at the time of her breast removal.  We used a silicone gel implant, which in breast reconstruction is our preferred implant.  So she left the hospital with breasts matching in size.

Other patients may have reconstruction using the body's own tissue, the TRAM or "Tummy Tuck" flap.  But for this woman, an implant was a great choice.

A few months later, as an outpatient surgery at Huntington Hospital, we reconstructed the right nipple and areola, using skin from the inner thigh for the areola.  This Long Island woman recovered from her breast reconstruction quickly.

Her post-operative results show a good match of size and nipple appearance, which is always our goal for breast reconstruction.
